20th Anniversary of the UNESCO flagship programme: UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation

20th Anniversary of the UNESCO flagship programme: UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation

Asia-Pacific Heritage 20/20 Forum and 2019 Awards Ceremony

“Ever since the Awards programme was established in 2000, we have witnessed major strides in cultural heritage conservation over the past 20 years”

Dr Duong Bich Hanh, Chair of the Jury and Chief of UNESCO Bangkok’s Culture Unit

The year 2019 marks 20 years of the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation which was conceived in Penang, Malaysia during UNESCO’s landmark “Economics of Heritage” regional conference in 1999.

The 20th anniversary presents an opportune moment to not only reflect on the achievements and lessons learned from the UNESCO Heritage Awards programme, but also to review how far heritage conservation in general has come in the past two decades within the region.  It was also an opportunity to discuss a future vision for the next two decades on the role and contribution of cultural heritage more broadly to sustainable development, within the broad framework defined by Agenda 2030, along with key partner institutions and thought leaders in the field.

A series of events were organized in Penang, Malaysia on 13 – 15 Oct.

Over 150 conservation experts, Award winners, Jury members, and government representatives and the public gathered in Penang to commemorate the achievements and to chart the course for the next two decades to come.
