Global dialogue and intellectual leadership

Inclusive dialogue is a precondition for consensus on the value of the curriculum to global education and development efforts. The IBE leads in generating opportunities for intellectual discussion aimed at recognising the still understated potential of curriculum to democratize learning and to create lifelong opportunities for all.

The essential competencies that citizens must posses to ensure national, regional and global development are acquired through education, and expressly through the curriculum. Even as this notion is accepted implicitly in educational contexts, there is a lack of explicit global recognition from the development community concerning the importance of the curriculum, what form it should take, and how best to leverage its value for development.

The IBE works to explicitly articulate the developmental value of curriculum to democratize learning and to create lifelong opportunities for all, as mandated by Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4. Moreover, we lead intellectual efforts to promote deeper understanding of this paradigm shift in curriculum and learning, away from traditional conceptions, toward novel understandings of the mechanisms through which education supports development. This requires us to promote and support policy and technical dialogue on a renewed approach to curriculum.

The IBE is also an intellectual leader in setting the norms and standards for what constitutes well-balanced curricula that could serve countries and their development needs. We are involved in the production, discussion, and validation of guidelines and tools needed for the design, development, and assessment of quality curricula.
