We created India’s first Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) product called Avaz in 2009. Avaz means “voice” in Hindi. It’s a picture & text based communication system for people with disabilities. People with autism, cerebral palsy, aphasia and other neurological conditions use Avaz to communicate their needs, wants, emotions and thoughts.

As the first AAC App in India, we were able to offer people with disabilities in India a contextual and an affordable solution. It was 10 times cheaper and more reliable than imported counterparts. Our work kickstarted conversations about assistive technology in countries like India, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Bangladesh and other developing countries.

By using our product range, over 75,000 people with disabilities in 100+ countries have been able to
be more confident since they are able to communicate whatever & whenever they want - be it in public places or in the comfort of their home.

In 2016, we created FreeSpeech - an app that helps children with specific language impairments to learn English. Drag and rearrange picture tiles, and FreeSpeech will convert them into a perfectly grammatical English sentence.

Scientific trials validating the efficacy of FreeSpeech have been presented at leading conferences in linguistics and special education.

Since 2016, the Government of Tamil Nadu has undertaken a massive assistive technology implementation exercise for children with speech and intellectual disabilities, a first for anywhere in South Asia.
Over 450 Avaz installed devices have been distributed to schools, early intervention centers and mobile therapy units across 32 districts in the state of Tamil Nadu. Over 100 special education teachers and therapists have been trained and supported by Avaz in this initiative.

The specific problem that we picked to address was to enable children with Dyslexia read better, and to be able to do so independently. When children read a printed text, they face many challenges. They may find a word difficult to pronounce. Or they may get distracted because of the pretty pictures accompanying the story. Usually a teacher is at the child’s side, helping them with pronunciation and ensuring that they remain focused on reading. But what of the times there is no one to guide the child?

Created in collaboration with the Madras Dyslexia Association, the Reader app brings together several proven reading strategies to enable children to read independently.
But with the MDA Avaz Reader by their side, children can now pick up any book in his school library, take a photo of the story that he wishes to read and happily enjoy the story all by themselves!
