OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

This position is located in the Ocean Science Section of the IOC headquarters at UNESCO in Paris and reports to the Head of the Ocean Science Section (OSS). Under the overall supervision of the Executive Secretary of IOC and the direct supervision of the Head of the Ocean Science Section, the incumbent will work in a collaborative team environment and will be responsible to undertake the following tasks and achieve the following objectives:

Long Description

Coordination

Support the IOC contribution to the coordination of the Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network (GOA-ON) to relevant ocean acidification UN processes and the Ocean Decade programme Ocean Acidification Research for Sustainability (OARS). Assist Member States and the GOA-ON members to report regularly towards progress made to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Target 14.3 and related data and metadata related SDG indicator 14.3.1 (of which IOC is the custodian Agency), more in particular:

  • Support the ongoing implementation of and data collection through the IOC SDG 14.3.1 database and a federated data system;
  • Assist in the further development of the 14.3.1 data portal, including the implementation of automatic communication with other relevant databases;
  • Assist in the preparation of relevant scientific publications about ocean acidification and IOC’s activities in this field;
  • Assist in the development of a quality assurance and quality control protocol for ocean acidification data, together with experts in the field.

Events management

Support GOA-ON and IOC in the development, organization and implementation of acidification information products contributing to achieving OARS outcomes, including the development of technical protocols, reporting requirements, best practices, and their publication in collaboration with, more in particular:

  • Continuous development, maintenance and update of Ocean Acidification training material, in particular taking into account the SDG indicator 14.3.1 methodology (Ocean Teacher Global Academy);
  • Support outreach and training courses to raise awareness of Ocean Acidification.

Communication and capacity development

Ensure effective communication among members of the GOA-ON Secretariat, GOA-ON Executive Council, OARS working groups and OARS partners including the organization of workshops, meetings, telephone conferences and the facilitation of email exchange, more in particular:

  • Facilitate communication among relative bodies involved;
  • Support the organization of the annual GOA-ON Executive Council Meeting, to be held in the margins of the 5th International Symposium on the Ocean in a High CO2 World (scheduled for September 2021);
  • Support the development of relevant ocean acidification outreach material;
  • Ensure the communication/news items on IOC and GOA-ON websites.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in physics, chemistry, biology, oceanography or environmental science.

 

Professional experience

  • Minimum of 3 year of practical experience in oceanography or marine science with preferably at least 1 year of working experience at the international level;
  • Proven experience related to, coordination of activities involving multiple partners;
  • Proven experience in planning, implementation and evaluation of science projects/programmes.

 

Skills and Competencies

  • Good knowledge of existing international and regional activities on ocean acidification;
  • Ability to work effectively within a multi-cultural environment;
  • Excellent computer skills; Office, Internet and e-mail;
  • Ability to prepare briefings and reports and to communicate technical information.

 

Languages

  • Excellent knowledge of English (spoken and written) and good knowledge of French.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education:

  • Training in the field of IT/project management/international legislation.
  • PhD in physics, chemistry, biology, oceanography or environmental science.

 

Skills and competences

  • Computer programming, database management systems, and/or web development;
  • Experience in quality control of documents for scientific, policy and general public audiences;
  • Familiarity with international organizations and/or the UN system.
