Created under the auspices of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO), the Ocean Data and Information System (ODIS) makes it possible for existing and emerging ocean data and information systems, from any stakeholder, to interoperate with one another.
This enables and accelerates more effective development and dissemination of digital technology and sharing of ocean data, information, and knowledge.
ODIS is a collaborative solution to interlink distributed systems for common goals. Global and regional projects partners are currently co-designing the Information System, using global and regional information nodes to test the proof of concept for ODIS and work together on the documentation.
The ODIS architecture development is being supported by the Ocean InfoHub Project, which will be conducting initial testing of ODIS on IOC-UNESCO and partner databases. Even while initial tests are underway, the system and standards are open for any institution or initiative interested in accessing and adopting the global data ecosystem.
Soon the development will start for a Global Hub Search Portal as a demonstration of the ODIS. A front-end web portal will dynamically build content based on the (meta)data shared by early implementers of the ODIS-Architecture. This portal will have a high profile on the OIH web site home page, and also showcase the three pilot regions.

At present the following seven sources are being integrated into the Ocean InfoHub Knowledge Graph. Work is underway with several other partners to also bring their holdings into the graph.

A test version of the OIH global hub has been developed and is now available online. It allows searching across the seven sources described above.
