Tim, Ann-Sofie, Anselm, Giorgia and Felix are the young people at the heart of the Green Office movement. Developed over 10 years ago, in several Dutch universities, the model has since been replicated across the world. Their mission? Embed sustainability in universities by empowering students and staff as change-makers.

The model is innovative. Students in the core team are paid. The Green Office is funded and approved by university management, and jointly run by students and staff. This approach to governance ensures a long-term impact and involves students in an agile and inclusive way.

Green Offices across the world

Since the movement was launched, 60 sustainability hubs have been set up in 10 countries and 4 continents. In 10 years, they have mobilised more than 11 million euros of funding to support sustainable development and created more than 300 jobs.

The core team helps participating universities set up a Green Office to provide information and help students and staff act on sustainability. Numerous successful local initiatives have been launched including electronic waste recycling (+190% in Maastricht) and cleaning up forests (Minsk).

What’s next? Further reinforce and develop this model in more cities, countries and continents. Would you like to join and support the movement?
