Unesco Green Citizens
UNESCO Green Citizens - In Brief

Innovative local citizen projects are thriving with ever greater and more positive impacts.
Over the years, we have seen these benefits for ourselves through our support for scientific research in biodiversity, hydrology, and the ocean, as well as education for sustainable development, at UNESCO sites across the globe – whether biosphere reserves, geoparks or natural heritage sites.
Given the environmental emergency facing us, we need to join forces to fuel collective action, reinforce commitments and drive the desire for change.
With UNESCO Green Citizens, by bringing to light selected initiatives yearly, the Organisation’s teams want to recognize, and thus support, local, innovative, duplicable citizen projects with an informed impact on their community, to help them and inspire the dissemination of these new ideas elsewhere.
Companies, media, volunteers, everyone can now help them through the platform and remind that it is together that we will make the necessary changes and decision-makers of the need to act, quickly.
Change is a collective endeavour!

UNESCO’s commitment to biodiversity: connecting people and nature for an inspiring future

Biodiversity is the living fabric of our planet. It underpins human wellbeing in the present and in the future, and its rapid decline threatens nature and people alike.

Many solutions exist for stopping and reversing the decline in biodiversity. UNESCO’s diverse networks, programmes and partners have observed positive and inspiring seeds of change around the world.

Education for Sustainable Development

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) empowers people with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to change the way they think and act towards a sustainable future.

UNESCO aims to transform society by changing what, where and how we learn in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, and meet the global challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss. It seeks to improve access to quality education on sustainable development at all levels and in all social contexts. ESD reorientates education so that individuals of all ages are encouraged to be responsible actors and change-makers, who resolve challenges collaboratively and contribute to creating a more sustainable world.

Hydrology

Water is the lifeline! Freshwater must be preserved and equitably distributed.

How we manage water, bond of life and fragile resource will define our success in achieving sustainable development. Access to water is critical to poverty reduction and human health, impacts gender equality, education, and all human activities. Ecosystems and biodiversity depend on water, and globally three-quarters of it is devoted to food production.

Citizens all over the world are inventing ingenious solutions to respond to increasing water challenges and to push governments to act for sustainable water management!

Local and Indigenous Knowledge

Local and indigenous knowledge systems are a precious source of wisdom which people tap into for creating solutions inspired by their interactions with nature, their culture, languages, and spirituality.

It refers to the understandings, skills and philosophies developed by societies with long histories of interaction with their natural surroundings. These unique ways of knowing are important facets of the world’s cultural diversity and provide a foundation for locally-appropriate sustainable development.
