OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

 

Under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General, Education (ADG/ED), guidance from the Director of the Division and the direct supervision from Chief of Section, the incumbent incumbent is responsible for implementing, monitoring and reporting on Global Citizenship and Peace Education   related initiatives and programmes, with an emphasis on social and emotional learning and the intersection innovative educational approaches. The incumbent will be expected to perform the following essential duties:

Long Description

  • Implement, monitor, evaluate and report on the Section’s projects and programs, assuming one or more thematic and/or focal responsibilities, including the development of knowledge products, advocacy materials, global/regional studies and other reports, as well as the monitoring of emerging issues in thematic areas relevant to the section.
  • Contribute to providing strategic guidance on UNESCO activities related to the Global Citizenship and Peace Education section, with special focus on citizenship education and interculturality, with a lifelong learning perspective, and coordinate engagement of Member States and partners in these areas.
  • Provide guidance and monitor the work of regional and field offices in the domain relevant to the section and offer technical support, including capacity development resources to field personnel.
  • Maintain and develop collaboration within the UNESCO Education Sector with other programme Sectors, Regional Bureaus and Education Category I Institutes on the design, implementation and evaluation of relevant programmes.
  • Contribute to resource mobilization by playing an active role in funding and project proposal developments, submissions and follow-up. Locate and mobilize resources and ensure the preparation of extra-budgetary projects progress reports, including the submission of essential information to concerned parties to support the timely finalization of accurate financial reports.
  • Strengthen network of key partners, including UNESCO Chairs, in the field of work of Global Citizenship and Peace Education.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in the field of Social or Human Sciences, History, Education, Political Science or related fields.

 

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant professional experience in international development, civic and citizenship education, education policies, of which preferably 2 years acquired at the international level.
  • Experience in international education research and/or policy development, and/or capacity development and training.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management, fundraising, outreach and network building. 

Skills and Competencies 

  • Very good understanding of education issues and challenges relating to civic and citizenship education, lifelong learning and interculturality.
  • Excellent communication skills, including ability to draft clearly and concisely for specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work innovatively to tight deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and deliver to deadline, as well as to work under pressure.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in multicultural environment with external and internal partners. 
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Good IT skills, including knowledge of MS software (Word, Excel etc.).  

 

 

Languages

  • Excellent knowledge (written and spoken) of English or French and good working knowledge of the other.

 

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

 

Work Experience

  • Experience in management of international education programmes. 

 

Languages

  • Knowledge of another official language of UNESCO (Arabic, Chinese, Russian and/or Spanish) .
