Director-General urges investigation into murder of television journalist Manish Kumar Singh in India

17/08/2021

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has condemned the killing of broadcaster Manish Kumar Singh whose dead body was found in a village in the state of Bihar, India, on 10 August.

I condemn the killing of Manish Kumar Singh. I urge the authorities to investigate this crime and establish its possible connection to the journalist’s professional work. Perpetrators of violent crimes must be prosecuted and those who believe that free expression can be muzzled with violence need to be shown otherwise.

Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General

Manish Kumar Singh, a reporter for privately-owned Hindi-language news channel Sudarshan TV, had been missing for two days when he was found dead. The journalist had recently investigated and reported on the activities of a local criminal group.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
