The Amazônia exhibition by Salgado and Jarre at UNESCO

23/11/2021

This exhibition presents the living Amazon, the one that the planet needs and that we must protect.

Sebastião Salgado, Brazilian photographer

On the occasion of the 41st session of the General Conference, five giant screens were installed in the UNESCO gardens, in front of the Effeil Tower.

For several days, the photographs of Sebastião Salgado, brought back from a decade of exploring the Amazon, were displayed on those screens. This exhibition is an alliance of two renowned artists and an alloy of the senses.

At the sight of the black and white pictures, the spectator rediscovers the lung of the world intact and crosses the glance of the Amerindian communities that Sebastião Salgado sometimes took several years to approach. Once the photographer had obtained permission, he had to undergo a quarantine to protect these population who had no antibodies to fight against diseases outside the forest.

The exhibition is accompanied by a sound creation by Jean Michel Jarre, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador since 1993.

Using sounds from the Amazon, Jean Michel Jarre composed a symphony recreating the kind of wandering one can do in an exhibition as well as in a forest.

The sound of the forest, what makes its originality is that all the sounds are unaware of the others: a bird that sings, is not aware that at the same time the rain falls on a rock.

Jean Michel Jarre, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador
