30/11/2021
06 - Clean Water and Sanitation

The UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa is hosting the first regional meeting entitled
“Africa: Megacities, Water, and Climate Change (MAWAC)” from 30 November to 1 December.

With the African continent being expected to house most of the new Megacities in the world in this century, the meeting will provide a platform for Megacities to share their experiences and challenges, propose solutions, and obtain access to technical and financial support for programs and projects. This will enable the megacities to successfully overcome the challenges of climate change.

This platform is expected to be formally launched on the occasion of the Second International Conference on Water, Megacities and Global Change which is scheduled to take place from 11 to 14 January 2022 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

Prior to the Second International Conference “Water, Megacities and Global Change”, UNESCO will facilitate the establishment of a regional platform for Africa (MAWAC-AFR), presenting the work plan for developing a regional cooperation framework.

The meeting which will be attended by decision makers, water and wastewater operators,  researchers, representatives from river basin authorities from the current and emerging megacities of Africa region, including Cairo, Kinshasa, Lagos and the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan, presents an opportunity to prepare the Regional Chapter’s participation at the 2nd  International Conference “Water, Megacities and Global Change and discuss the first draft of Terms of Reference (TOR) of the MAWAC-AFR Regional Chapter.
