UNESCO’s Communication and Information Sector side-events during the 41st General Conference

Launching a global platform to value and support the world’s languages supporting freedom of expression and independent journalism in times of crisis, and a retrospective of the work of African writer Hampâté Bâ, among the CI side-events at UNESCO’s 41st General Conference.

Launch of a South-South cooperation for the Judges Initiative on freedom of expression, access to information and safety of journalists in Portuguese speaking countries in Africa

The event will highlight the activities that will be implemented in 2022 under the framework of the South-South cooperation strategy developed with the Brazilian National School of Judges, the Permanent Delegation of Brazil to UNESCO, and the Communication and Information Sector in UNESCO. The initiative will support judicial actors from Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa in strengthening their capacities on freedom of expression, access to information and the safety of journalists international and regional standards.

Journalism is a public good: Presentation of the Highlights of the World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development: Global Report 2021/2022

Co-organized with the Government of Sweden, this side event will present the key findings of the 2021/2022 global edition of UNESCO’s Report World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development. Opened by Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General, and Amanda Lind, Minister for Culture and Democracy of Sweden (video message), the event will feature an interactive roundtable with Joseph Stiglitz, laureate of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences; Antonia Kerle, Policy and Insights Research Manager at Economist Impact; Catalina Botero, former Organization of American States Special Rapporteur, and current member of Facebook’s Oversight Board; and Shahir Zahine, Founder and Director of the non-profit Afghan media group Killid, about how journalism can innovate and be supported to survive amidst the current financial crisis affecting local newsrooms and journalists around the world.

Launch of UNESCO World Atlas of Languages

Of the many thousand languages that exist today, many are at risk of disappearing. UNESCO’s World Atlas of Languages aims to document, value and support all of the world’s languages, providing the global community with a new perspective for a more inclusive, comprehensive and transversal understanding of linguistic diversity, and to renew mobilization to protect, preserve and promote it. Opening remarks will include a special address by the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Mr. José Francisco Calí Tzay.
The World Atlas of Languages will serve to support the implementation of the Global Plan of Action for Making a Decade of Action for Indigenous Languages, in the context of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022-2032), for which UNESCO has been designated lead UN agency.

Wisdom and Laughter: The Odyssey of Amadou Hampâté Bâ

Location: Hall Ségur

A selection of the works of Amadou Hampâté Bâ, the African writer who dedicated his life to the defense of oral traditions and traditional knowledge in West Africa, will be displayed in Hall Ségur as part of the exhibition The UNESCO Adventure, commemorating the 75 years of the Organization. The archives consist of texts, photos, videos and speeches from the renowned writer safeguarded and digitalized by the Hampâté Bâ Foundation with the support of UNESCO. The collection of works are exhibited as part of the 30th anniversary of the passing of Amadou Hampâté Bâ.
