UNESCO IITE participated in the VI International conference “Reading and literacy in education and culture: a digital dimension”

19–20 November 2020, the international conference “Reading and literacy in education and culture: a digital dimension” was held in Moscow by the Reading Association of Russia. The conference was aimed to highlight and discuss the issues of literacy, reading and perception of texts in the digital environment and on paper, to outline ways and forms of support and development of reading based on social partnership in the field of education, culture and publishing.

The key speakers at the conference were the representatives of the leading Russian and foreign universities, libraries and publishing organizations: Ms. Tatyana Chernigovskaya (Scientist in neuroscience and psycholinguistics and the theory of consciousness, Corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Education), Mr. Colin Harrison (Emeritus Professor of the University of Nottingham, expert in literacy research), Ms. Natalya Smetannikova (President of the Reading Association of Russia), Mr. William Brozo (Professor of the College of Education and Human Development at George Mason University, Virginia, USA), Mr. Jeroen Clemens (Co-chair of the Thematic Working Group Digital Literacy on the Executive Committee of the European Literacy Policy Network ELINET, Netherlands) and others.

At the conference, Ms. Tatiana Murovana, Programme specialist of the UNESCO IITE, delivered a presentation “Critical thinking 2020: is it obvious or incredible?” and disclosed an approach to critical thinking as the ability to independently manage, direct, correct and reflect the cognitive process. In addition, she presented the attitudes and skills effective for achieving critical autonomy and proactive behavior as one of the most important results of critical thinking.
