Changbaishan

The Changbaishan Biosphere Reserve is located in the eastern part of the Eurasian continent, in the southeastern part of Jilin Province, China. It covers an area of 196,465 hectares, including 16 dormant and active volcanoes and their crater lakes. The highest peak on the Chinese side of Mount Changbai’s ridge is ‘White Cloud Peak’ at 2,691 m and in its caldera can be found ‘Heavenly Lake’, hot springs and waterfalls. In 1979, Changbaishan became one of the first three biosphere reserves in the People’s Republic of China.

Here, Heaven Lake, situated on a crater, crowns the highest peak of the Chinese Changbai volcanic range. In the Changbaishan Biosphere Reserve, alpine tundra rises imposingly from the landscape of mixed forests and other vegetation types. The Chinese merganser and sika deer are the stars of the local fauna. This Reserve is a pioneer in embracing ecotourism in China: local communities cultivate medicinal plants,
implement educational programmes and protect biodiversity.

species of wild plants have been recorded in Changbaishan. This outstanding diversity only exists due to the complex configuration of the high altitudinal range, basaltic soil and monsoon influenced temperate climate. The mountains have traditionally provided the inventories of medicinal plants.
