Changbaishan
Here, Heaven Lake, situated on a crater, crowns the highest peak of the Chinese Changbai volcanic range. In the Changbaishan Biosphere Reserve, alpine tundra rises imposingly from the landscape of mixed forests and other vegetation types. The Chinese merganser and sika deer are the stars of the local fauna. This Reserve is a pioneer in embracing ecotourism in China: local communities cultivate medicinal plants,
implement educational programmes and protect biodiversity.
Listen to ZHAO Yueming and XU Lianxiang talk about the Changbaishan Biosphere Reserve in this podcast.
The Mount Changbai region and Changbaishan Biosphere Reserve are important habitats of the Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris longipilis), which ranges across the mountainous eastern Sino-Russian border. It is the largest tiger subspecies and can travel up to 1,000 km.
species of wild plants have been recorded in Changbaishan. This outstanding diversity only exists due to the complex configuration of the high altitudinal range, basaltic soil and monsoon influenced temperate climate. The mountains have traditionally provided the inventories of medicinal plants.
Changpai Scotch Pine (Pinus Syluestriformis), also known as "Beauty Pine", has a beautiful plant shape, straight trunk, evergreen throughout the seasons and golden bark. This endemic species of Changbai Mountain has its only 20,000 individuals all distributing in the northern part of the Changbaishan Biosphere Reserve.
Changbaishan is located at the meeting point between European, Chinese and Siberian species. The biosphere reserve is home to 2,639 species of wild plants and 1,586 species of wild animals, making it a gene pool for the whole of Eurasia.
