The Natural Science Sector at the UNESCO Nairobi Office design and implements its activities in relation to the International Science Programmes (ISP) of UNESCO: International Hydrological Programme (IHP); Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB); International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme (IGGP); and International Basic Sciences Programme (IBSP). For activities pertaining to IHP; Ecological and Earth Sciences; and Disaster Risk Reduction, this office has a coordination role for all sub-Saharan African countries with other Regional Offices. IOC’s Sub Commission for Africa and Adjacent Island States (IOCAFRICA)
The focus of the IOCAFRICA is on:Understanding of the ocean & coastal processes around Africa,Monitoring and early warning systems for coastal and oceanic natural hazards,Understanding of how African oceans and coastal areas will be impacted by changing climates,Managing and mitigating the impacts of coastal hazards and climate change,Strengthening of marine and oceanographic training and research institutions and Creation of critical mass of marine science professionals
Communication and Information
The sector promotes sustainable development by fostering freedom of expression and universal access to information and knowledge, and in building peaceful and inclusive knowledge societies in Eastern Africa region. It works in close cooperation with international and national stakeholders to promote press freedom, safety of journalists, media and information literacy, and sustainability of community media in the region. Moreover, the sector closely cooperates with Member States to safeguard and preserve the worlds’ cultural and linguistic heritage, and also in promotion of innovation in ICTs for ensured equitable and inclusive access to quality education for lifelong learning in the region.
