The UNESCO World Heritage Centre would like to express its condolences for the lives lost in northern Italy last week in the floods and mudslides resulting from torrential rains.

Villages as well as road and railway communication lines of the Cinque Terre World Heritage site have been severely affected by the rains, and the Centre is working with the national and local authorities to evaluate the extent of the damage and assess appropriate measures to be taken.

In the meantime, UNESCO is ready to assist the authorities in any way possible, including providing expertise which may be required for the rehabilitation of this exceptional cultural landscape.
