Hedva Ser's participation to the International Forum on the Challenges of the Reconstruction of Beirut

On the occasion of the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale, prominent architects gathered on San Clemente Island, to consider a support operation and plan the future reconstruction of Beirut.

The International Forum on the Challenges of the Reconstruction of Beirut, “RISE FOR THE ASHES” took place in Venice on the 14th and 15th of September, with the support of the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe and the International Union of Architects.

This workshop addressed the issues, presented solutions and focused on how to use urban planning to improve the quality of life in the city and local communities' situation regarding their immediate environment.

In response to this crisis, UNESCO launched the Li Beirut initiative a year ago, to mobilize funds for education, heritage and culture. Present to deliver a message on behalf of the Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, Ana Luiza Thompson Flores, Director, UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe stated :

We reaffirm UNESO’s solidarity with the people of Lebanon, a month after the first anniversary of the deadly blast that not only led to a heavy loss of life but devastated this emblematic city’s heritage, its thriving culture, and many educational and cultural and media institutions (…) Our Li Beirut initiative is about rekindling hope - so that students and teachers can safely return to their learning institutions; so that youth take an active part in the rehabilitation of their city, so that people can reconnect with the cultural spaces and heritage that make up the fabric and identity of this uniquely diverse and creative city.

Our UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Hedva Ser was one of the organizers along with Ayten Mirzoyeva and the architect Thomas Schinko from Vasconi Cabinet Paris. She feels cultural diplomacy is and will always be a tool to guide communities toward reconciliation:

In the case of Beirut, cultural diplomacy can open the door to reconciliation and the mobilization of international and local actors. I truly believe that art can be a major element that we can all use to help cultural diplomacy in our world and to promote exchange and understanding between people.
Hedva Ser, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador
