Director-General condemns killing of journalist Ajay Lalwani in Pakistan

26/03/2021

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has called for an investigation into the shooting of journalist Ajay Lalwani in Pakistan’s Sindh province on 17 March.

I condemn the killing of Ajay Lalwani and call on the Pakistani authorities to investigate this crime and hold its perpetrators to account. Journalists must be free to carry out their work without fear of death or violence.

Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General

A local news correspondent for Royal News TV and the Daily Puchano, Lalwani reported on issues concerning Pakistan’s minorities, notably the Hindu community. He was an active member of the Sindh Journalist Council and a media freedom activist.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
