Director-General condemns murder of journalist Kashif Anwar Ansari in Pakistan

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has called for an investigation into the killing of newspaper journalist Kashif Anwar Ansari, also known as Kashif Hussain, in the town of Vanike Tarar, in Pakistan’s province of Punjab on 10 August.

I condemn the killing of Kashif Anwar Ansari. I call on the authorities to investigate this crime and bring its perpetrators to justice. Journalists must be able to carry out their work informing the public without fearing for their lives.

Kashif Anwar Ansari, correspondent for Urdu-language newspaper, Daily Khabrain, was found dead in his home with his throat slit.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
