Director-General condemns murder of journalists Fredy López Arévalo and Alfredo Cardoso in Mexico

02/11/2021

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay has condemned attacks on journalists in Mexico on 28 October that claimed the lives of print journalist Fredy López Arévalo in the city of in San Cristóbal de las Casas and online reporter Alfredo Cardoso in Acapulco.

I condemn the killings of Fredy López Arévalo and Alfredo Cardoso. I call on the Mexican authorities to investigate these crimes and bring their perpetrators to justice. Today, International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, it is incumbent upon me to stress that letting such crimes go unpunished emboldens those who resort to violence to silence journalists. Violence and impunity form a vicious cycle that must be broken to secure the basic human right to free expression.

Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General

Veteran journalist Fredy López Arévalo, editor of the magazine Jovel and correspondent for El Financiero and El Universal, was shot dead outside his place of residence in San Cristóbal de las Casas as he was returning home with his wife and children on 28 October.

Also on 28 October, Alfredo Cardoso, founder and director of digital news site Las Dos Costas, was kidnapped from his home in Acapulco. He was found on 29 October suffering from serious gunshot injuries to which he succumbed in hospital two days later.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
