Sub‐regional Capacity Building workshop on Sustainable Tourism for the Caribbean Travel and tourism are among the largest industries and cultural tourism has been the most rapidly growing international sector. In the Caribbean, travel and tourism have the world's highest share of contribution to GDP. However, Small Island Developing States are vulnerable to various external shocks, including volatile tourism and natural disasters. With millions of tourists visiting World Heritage sites each year, tourism has become an important crosscutting issue and management concern at most World Heritage sites. Sustainable planning and management of tourism are among the most pressing challenges concerning the future of the World Heritage Convention. Health, social and economic inequalities have been further exposed along with weaknesses in social protection. Many persons within the informal economy are not able to access welfare provisions. The projections of overall macroeconomic recovery being slow as all facets of economic life have been negatively affected in Caribbean Small Island Developing States.
