The Universal Periodic Review and its potential to foster freedom of expression, access to information and safety of journalists

9 November 2021

As part of the UN efforts to reinvigorate its engagement with the Universal Periodic Review process, as well as the Secretary-General’s Call to Action for Human Rights in February 2020, UNESCO has developed new Guidelines for UN Country Teams on the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) and its potential to foster freedom of expression, access to information and safety of journalists.

These guidelines aim at providing practical advice on how the UPR exercise can be used to promote and streamline Access to Information, Freedom of Expression and the Safety of Journalists within the UPR exercise.
