Anti-Doping Convention: Mauritania to become the 189th State Party

15/11/2019
16 - Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

The International Convention against Doping in Sport (2005) is pleased to welcome its 189th State Party.

On 15 November 2019, H.E. Ms Cheikh Boide Cisse, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Mauritania to UNESCO, deposited the ratification instrument during UNESCO’s Conventions Ceremony in the framework of the 40th session of the General Conference and in the presence of UNESCO’s Director-General, Ms Audrey Azoulay.

This new ratification represents a crucial step forward towards the universalization of the Convention as only six UNESCO Member States have yet to accede to it: Afghanistan, Guinea-Bissau, Lebanon, Niue, Sao Tome and Principe, and South Sudan. The collective commitment of States Parties affirms the power of international law as a universal language, as emphasized by UNESCO’s Director-General.

UNESCO’s International Convention against Doping in Sport is the only international norm engaging governments’ responsibility to protect the ethics and values of sport.
