Mr. Michael Lopuke Lotyam, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MOEST) of South Sudan, and Mr. Omot Olok Okon, Director General of the Curriculum and Quality Assurance Directorate, visited UNESCO IICBA on 1 March. A meeting was held between the delegation and IICBA staff with in-depth discussion about challenges in education faced by South Sudan and future cooperation possibilities of the two parties.

Though suffered from long-term conflicts, South Sudan has never broken the continuation of its education. Currently the country is facing several challenges in education. Such includes capacity development of teachers in a sustainable manner, reducing gender disparity, enhancing pastoralist education, and education of refugees.

South Sudan keeps a close connection with UNESCO through past cooperation with IBE on curriculum framework, and UNESCO Office in South Sudan on education policies and programmes. Possibilities of future cooperation between the MOEST and IICBA are explored in the fields of teacher professional development through pre-service and in-service trainings, girls’ education, ICT integration in education, refugee education, and enhancement of pastoralist education.
