Uganda celebrated the world Teachers’ Day on 5 October at the Cricket Oval Grounds in Lugogo Kampala Uganda. The slogan of this year is “Valuing teachers, improving their status”, as reminder that qualified, well-supported and well-respected teachers are at the heart of the achievement of free quality education for all. His Excellence Mr. Yoweri Museveni, President of the Republic of Uganda presided the events. IICBA was represented by Ms. Eyerusalem Azmeraw at the celebration.

Recalling the signing of the UNESCO/ILO recommendations Concerning the Status of Teachers in 1966, the celebration was marked by the launch of A Harmonized Framework for Initial Teacher Training in Uganda & Teacher Competency Profiles developed by the Ministry of Education in Uganda in collaboration with the Uganda National Teachers’ Union and the research report on Global Response to Commercialization of Education. These achievements have been realized through the Capacity Development for Education (CapED) programme with the technical backstopping of IICBA.

Besides, concerning the key role that teacher should play under the new Sustainable Development Goals on education (SDG4), a national dialogue on teacher issues organized by UNESCO-IICBA, the Ministry of Education and Sports of Uganda, the Uganda National Association of Teachers and Education International held on 4th October 2016 at Hotel Africana. The dialogue provided an opportunity for teachers to voice their concerns regarding the status of their welfare, motivation and other aspects.

On the national dialogue, Ms. Eyerusalem Azmeraw, representing IICBA, facilitated and reported back on one of the groups’ discussion under the theme of “For quality education we need quality teachers: reflections, recommendations and strategies” towards improving pre-service training , in-service training and continuous professional development. She also supported on drafting key discussion questions with the Uganda project coordinator for the panel discussion and participate in wider panel discussion.

Both events were attended by international guests from Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Cameroun, Senegal and Europe.
