IICBA organised a five-day training workshop on Gender Responsive Pedagogy and STEAM Teaching for Secondary Education from the 5th to 9th of the December 2016. The objective of this workshop was "Retaining Girls in Lower Secondary Schools and Increasing their Learning Out-comes in Ethiopia, Gambella and Somali Regional States". The project was partially supported by the government of Japan. Facilitating the workshop were experts from IICBA and the Federal Ministry of Education in Ethiopia, who focused on imparting knowledge and skills of gender mainstreaming in education, ICT competencies to science teachers from the Gambella and Somali regions.

Dr. Yumiko Yokozeki, Director of UNESCO-IICBA, welcomed the participants on the first day. Ms. Eyerusalem Azmeraw, project officer of IICBA, and Mr. Temesgen from the Federal Ministry of Education in Ethiopia, then started the training with presentations of progress reports from schools. Mr. Adankegne Mekonnen, Associate Administrative Officer of IICBA, introduced approaches on financial management and reporting for income-generating activities, Mr. Henok Workye, IT of IICBA, provided basic computer knowledge, and Dr. Temechegn Engida, program officer of IICBA, facilitated training on ICT and science education in secondary school. The workshop was closed by Dr. Temechegn Engida with  an inspiring call to action: “We have to make sure that girls will try as much as possible and their possibilities to be successful. They will become scientists, even more than boys.”
