UNESCO International Conference on the Prevention of Violent Extremism through Education: Taking Action; New Delhi, India
From September 19–21, 2016, in New Delhi, India, UNESCO-IICBA Director Yumiko Yokozeki attended the UNESCO International Conference on the Prevention of Violent Extremism through Education: Taking Action. This event was co-organized by UNESCO Headquarters and the UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP).
On the second day of the conference, Dr. Yokozeki moderated the concurrent session on the role of teachers in curtailing violent extremism. This session took the form of a plenary discussion. The panelists for this session included Mrs. Aisha Kadiri, Dean of the School of Early Childhood Care and Primary Education at the Federal College of Education in Yola, Nigeria, and Mr. Yosa Wawa, Professor of History at the College of Education at the University of Juba in South Sudan, and Dr. Mahmoud Mehrmohammadi, Acting President of Farhangian University in Iran.
This concurrent session covered a number of important issues such as the physical protection of both students and teachers while they are at school, psychosocial support for both teachers and students during and after violent or threatening events, and the role which quality education plays in the prevention of prejudices and recruitment to violent extremism. These ideas demonstrate the essential role teachers have in curtailing violent extremism.
Overall, the conference was a success and its participants plan to continue discussing and working together on these relevant and substantial issues.
