New collaboration brings ocean science and conservation to the public through editorial features, a special “Ocean Decade” issue of Nautilus Ocean, and in-person events.
UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO) and Nautilus Magazine have joined forces to publish a special series on the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) – the Ocean Decade – featuring online and print articles and interviews for Nautilus Ocean.
With the support and collaboration of the Schmidt Ocean Institute and the 5 Media Foundation, the new section of Nautilus Ocean will tell the story of how the UN Ocean is facilitating a global knowledge revolution in how we generate ocean science and transform it into innovative solutions for addressing the major challenges of today, from marine pollution to climate change.
“The Ocean Decade will be successful if the science helps to create more harmonious human relations with the ocean. The new partnership with the extremely talented Nautilus’ team serves this purpose. We plan to work together to reach out to a broader range of stakeholders and inspire them as well as general public to take part in Decade’s transformative actions” said Vladimir Ryabinin, Executive Secretary of IOC-UNESCO.
The editorial side of the partnership will feature a new section in the Nautilus Ocean Magazine highlighting the stories behind the science-based solutions regularly endorsed as Ocean Decade Actions. The partners will also develop a special Ocean Decade issue of Nautilus Ocean, to be published and distributed at the upcoming 2022 UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon (27 June – 1 July 2022).
In addition to the editorial aspects, the Ocean Decade partnership will support a number of events in 2022 to connect people with the ocean. These events will start with the Nautilus Ocean Art Gallery, an exhibition of art from the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s Artist-at-Sea program, that will run from March 15th to the 20th at the Explorers Club in New York City and will be open to the public.
