Submitting States and priorities for the 2022 cycle

Under Decision 15.COM 9, the Committee made two decisions: it set the total number of files for the 2022 and 2023 cycles at 110 at least (55 in 2021 and 55 in 2022), and it decided that one file per submitting State should be processed during the two-year period of 2022–2023 (known as priority (0)). In other words, those States Parties that submitted files that could not be treated in the 2021 cycle will see their files given priority in the 2022 cycle, following the principle of one file per submitting State during the two year period (2022-2023).

When establishing the list of nomination files to be treated, the conditions mentioned above are combined with the level of priorities stated in paragraph 34 of the Operational Directives:

  • (i) Files from States having no elements inscribed, good safeguarding practices selected or requests for International Assistance greater than US$100,000 approved, and nominations to the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding;
  • (ii) Multinational files; and
  • (iii) Files from States with the fewest elements inscribed, good safeguarding practices selected or requests for International Assistance greater than US$100,000 approved, in comparison with other submitting States during the same cycle.

For the 2022 cycle, a high number of nomination files were received once again and also from a high number of submitting States (76) (by the deadline of 31 March 2021).

The following files will be examined during the seventeenth session of the Committee to be held in 2022:

  • Thirty-eight national files under priority (0)
  • Seven files under priority (i); in addition to two national files for the Urgent Safeguarding List, this group also includes five multinational files with at least one submitting State that has no national elements inscribed
  • Fourteen multinational files under priority (ii)
  • Total: 59 files
