The Communication and Information Sector’s mission is to promote freedom of expression, media development and media literate societies, and to build knowledge societies through fostering universal access to information, innovation for sustainable development and the preservation of documentary heritage. (The role of this vacant position does not include responsibility for UNESCO's wider external communications, which is managed by the Division for Communications and Public Engagement.)

OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

With the support of the Saudi Arabian Royal Commission for AlUla, the Memory of the World Programme initiated this Funds-in-Trust Project: “Preservation and Awareness-raising of Documentary Heritage in AlUla and Saudi Arabia.” The objective of the project is to raise awareness of the global significance of Saudi Arabian documentary heritage and that of the larger Arab region among stakeholders as well as the public, including by creating the Kingdom's Institute Platform for the Promotion of Documentary Heritage in the Arab World. It also aims to build capacity for the identification, preservation, and accessibility of documentary heritage among memory institutions in AlUla and Saudi Arabia through the creation of a National MoW Committee, and possibly a National Register, and enhancing scholarly research and academic reflection on documentary heritage for intercultural dialogue.


Under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information (ADG/CI), and the direct supervision of the Head of the Documentary Heritage Unit and in close coordination with the Junior Professional Officer for the AlUla project, the Project Officer for the AlUla project shall perform the following tasks:

 

  • Coordinate in a timely, coherent and integrated manner the implementation and monitoring of the activities funded by the Royal Commission for AlUla within the framework of the “AlUla Documentary Heritage Project: Preservation and Awareness-raising of Documentary Heritage in AlUla and Saudi Arabia.”
  • Develop, plan and implement overall communication activities to increase the visibility of the above-mentioned project in cooperation with the Executive Office of the CI Sector. 
  • Contribute to the further development of the project portfolio and capacity building activities of the Documentary Heritage Unit in support of the identification, preservation and accessibility of documentary heritage in the Arab States. 
  • Support the Kingdom's Institute in its preparation of future nomination dossiers for the Memory of the World International Register. 
  • Coordinate overall cooperation with the Royal Commission for AlUla, including by conceiving and articulating new opportunities for collaboration, preparing project proposals and cooperation frameworks and following up with the Kingdom's Institute.
  • Contribute to the production and dissemination of knowledge on sustainable development through the identification, preservation and accessibility of documentary heritage in the Arab States, and the implications of such knowledge for AlUla’s documentary heritage. 
  • Provide intellectual guidance and lead the production of tools to strengthen the capacities of national memory institutions in the Arab States, with a special focus on AlUla.
  • Analyse major policy trends and strategies in the preservation and promotion of documentary heritage and synthesize these to inform the implementation of the current and future phases of the project.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in the field of information, communication, archival science, records management, or related discipline including history, archeology, sociology, heritage studies.

 

Work Experience 

  • A minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible and relevant professional experience in cultural heritage conservation, of which preferably at least 2 years at the international level.
  • Experience in results-based project design and management in a multilateral context and planning, development and implementation of programmes and projects in cultural heritage preservation/conservation.
  • Experience developing and implementing strategies to build partnerships and leverage support, and engagement on complex topics through social and traditional media. 
  • Relevant professional work experience in strategic communication and outreach, public relations, media, or related field. 
  • Experience in fundraising and resource mobilization.

 

Skills/Competencies

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to identify key strategic issues, objectives, opportunities and risks.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a multicultural environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, tact and diplomacy.

Languages

  • Excellent knowledge of English. 
     

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education

  • Relevant professional training in the field of cultural heritage preservation/conservation.

 

Work Experience

  • Experience with the United Nations System or in an international development cooperation.
  • Relevant professional experience in UNESCO’s programmes and/or normative tools in the field of communication and information.
  • Field experience in documentary heritage preservation/conservation projects.

 

Skills/Competencies

  • Familiarity with the Memory of the World Programme, including the 2015 Recommendation Concerning the Preservation of, and Access to, Documentary Heritage Including in Digital Form.
  • Familiarity with other heritage programmes within UNESCO, and their relevance to documentary heritage.

 

Languages

  • Knowledge of Arabic.
