Director-General urges investigation into murder of journalist Givanildo Oliveira in Brazil

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has called for an investigation into the killing of reporter Givanildo Oliveira in Fortaleza, Brazil, on 7 February.

I condemn the murder of Givanildo Oliveira. The killing of Givanildo Oliveira is a blow to freedom of the press and freedom of expression. I call on the authorities to spare no effort in investigating this crime and bringing its perpetrators to trial.

Givanildo Oliveira, also known as ‘Gigi’, was one of the founders of the local news site, PriambuNews. The journalist who had received threats for his reports on local crime was shot dead near his home in the Pirambu neighbourhood of Fortaleza.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
