Second World Ocean Assessment

The 2021 World Ocean Assessment (WOA II) provides a report on the state of the planet’s oceans.

The 2021 World Ocean Assessment (WOA II) is the major output of the second cycle of the United Nations Regular Process for Global Reporting and Assessment of the States of the Marine Environment, including Socioeconomic Aspects.

WOA II updates the first World Ocean Assessment, providing scientific information from more than 300 experts on the state of the marine environment in a comprehensive and integrated manner to support decisions and actions for the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals, in particular goal 14, as well as the implementation of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

The IOC supports the Regular Process and contributes to each iteration of the World Ocean Assessment by coordinating the scientific networks, data, and expertise needed to support this UN-wide process.
