UNESCO supports improved management and governance of water resources with region-specific educational activities and capacity-building. The aim of UNESCO’s water programmes is to tackle discrimination and unequal access to water resources and to decision-making processes.

UN Resolution 64/292 (2010) “recognizes the right to safe and clean drinking water and sanitation as a human right that is essential for the full enjoyment of life and all human rights”.
Water and Gender Mainstreaming
The UNESCO World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP) has a Toolkit on Sex-disaggregated Water Data. It is the first existing initiative targeted at achieving a global standard for gender-responsive water assessment, monitoring and reporting. In 2010, UNESCO established a specific WWAP Advisory Group on Gender Equality.
