UNESCO is deeply concerned regarding the lives lost and heritage threatened following yesterday’s magnitude 6.8 earthquake in central Myanmar, which damaged ancient Buddhist pagodas in the former capital of Bagan. Myanmar Culture Ministry officials have been divided into 11 teams to cove...r 11 different zones in the region and are currently carrying out assessments. UNESCO specialists have been sent to the area to support the government in these efforts.
Our organization remains committed to working with the government of Myanmar and partners to ensure the preservation and rehabilitation of this precious heritage site.
UNESCO has been working closely with the government of Myanmar to build its nomination file for the inscription of the Bagan Archaeological Area and Monuments to UNESCO’s World Heritage register.
