SDG Resources for Educators - Good Health and Well-Being

Back to Homepage

Well-being is a feeling of satisfaction with life, a state characterized by health, happiness, and prosperity. Good health concerns the care of the human body and everything that can be done to protect it from sickness and intoxication and enable access to care.

US$1 billion is spent each year on vaccines which can save up to 1 million children per year. Since 1990, thanks to vaccines, 17,000 fewer children have died every day, but more than 6 million children are still dying before their fifth birthday each year.

Why Education is crucial to achieving SDG-3

Education is key to educate people on drug and alcohol abuse and prevention as well as on mental health issues. It provides relevant knowledge and information about family planning, sex education and reproductive health. (Access to Learning objectives for SDG-3)

Within a context of fun, play, movement and active recreation, learners at this level begin to develop socio-emotional literacy, learning to manage feelings, to build relationships and to understand others’ emotions. (Access Educational materials here)

At this stage, learners acquire basic knowledge about mental and emotional health, as well as about sexual and reproductive health and rights. They develop the relevant abilities to express feelings in a healthy way, managing emotional and physical stress, and seeking assistance if necessary. As a result, tolerance, respect and understanding of others’ differences and emotions is promoted. (Access Educational materials here)

Health education at this level includes learning about the factors for communicable and non-communicable diseases, and about the links between quality of nutritional intake, environmental factors and lifestyle choices. Through research and evaluation, learners acquire the necessary skills to critically analyze factors affecting health and disparities. In parallel, they develop responsibility for their own personal health and well-being as part of their own choices and behaviours, as well as for the choices and circumstances of others. Access Educational materials here)

  • Green Kindergartens – environmental education for young children- Live and Learn Environmental Education & Vanuatu Early Childhood Association. - Page 19- A comprehensive handbook was developed in consultation with 26 teachers. It covers 6 environmental topics and guides teachers through experiential learning activities, including songs, storytelling and art projects they can use with children. The handbook is designed to complement the two Green Kindergartens posters “Waste” and “Gardening”. These posters and booklet were pretested before design with a group. The workshops covered practical activities included in the Green Kindergartens handbook. Teachers learned ways to teach children about environmental issues using practical, hands-on activities. These workshops sought to assist teachers in developing their students’ critical literacy, problem-solving skills, decision-making skills and dialogue, and to link learning to taking action in the local community.

  • Promoting environmental and human welfare - A recycling project at the school has been developed. The Protea Park primary school project reflects the gradual disappearance of rubbish dumps in the school’s neighborhood. Hence the establishing of an eco-friendly school with an emphasis on environmental ethics is an undertaking of great importance for Ramallah students. The objectives were to:  increase green areas in the school by planting wild and endemic plants; produce traditional gifts through reducing, recycling and reusing solid waste; promote voluntary work to keep the forests clean and to investigate biodiversity; investigate environmental ethics and global warming; provide healthy, traditional breakfasts using natural resources; and establish an environmental SEMEP club.
