To help prevent young people from going hungry or dropping out of school, while also promoting eco-citizenship, Jose Adolfo Quisocala Condori created the Bartselana del Estudiante Cooperative. Through this virtual school, the team offers teenagers and young people experience-based education focused on finance, technology, entrepreneurship, and the environment.

Promoting eco-currencies

As part of this practical and fun approach to financial education, the Banco del Estudiante Bartselana converts solid waste produced in homes and schools into “eco-currencies.” Each participant receives a VISA debit card, which can be used at ATMs in Peru and the world, financial applications, to pay for services and goods, transfer money and make “Eco Savings” with solid waste. They have access to nano credits in basic foods, as well as school supplies and IT equipment.

So far, the initiative has included 6,500 young people in the Peruvian financial system and, each month, avoids 12 tons of solid waste from becoming garbage.

Would you like to bring this innovative project to more young people in Peru and beyond?
