Social entrepreneur Tristan Lecomte understands how agroforestry and nature-based solutions can protect our ecosystems. So, in 2010, he created the PUR project and joined forced with the local Oro Verde collective to plant trees on degraded, unused land in Peru.
Peru’s San Martín region was heavily deforested in the 1980s. As a result, soil productivity and ecosystem services decreased in an area recognised as a biodiversity hotspot. To promote alternative cultures, in 2010, the PUR project launched Jubilación Segura to bring together, local small-scale, Fairtrade, organic cocoa and coffee farming farmers. Together, they planted trees on degraded and unused land based on forestry models, as well as on cultivated plots to develop agroforestry practices. Trees were also planted in the Amazonas Region, which faces high deforestation due to cattle ranching.
Fostering biodiversity through collective action
Jubilación Segura aims to protect the local ecosystem by developing agroforestry to ensure the long-term sustainability of cocoa and coffee plantations, fight deforestation and its consequences – such as soil erosion, decreased water availability and biodiversity loss – while also enhancing farmers’ livelihoods by providing alternative sources of income.
Working with local partners and cooperatives, the project has been replicated in more than 40 countries. Today, more than 7000 farmers have planted around 5 million trees and restored the fertility of 4310 ha of land. Pilot projects are also being launched to focus on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification to create a sustainable timber value chain.
