To address energy poverty in rural schools in Uganda, Vanessa Nakate has come up with more economical and sustainable solutions. With the help of teachers and local communities.
Ugandan activist Vanessa Nakate is involved in the energy transition of schools in rural communities. These schools are dependent on fossil fuels, using charcoal and firewood for their traditional stoves. These stoves are not energy efficient and emit carbon dioxide and smoke. The high consumption of firewood leads to a reduction in forest and vegetation cover in the surrounding communities. These schools also use kerosene lamps that provide insufficient light, leading to health problems such as visual impairment and headaches caused by the smoke.
Proposing energy solutions
Vash green schools project has provided 15 schools with access to lighting by equipping them with solar panels. This access also has an impact on the means and methods of teaching. For example, teachers can distribute typed materials. Ecological stoves and cookers have also been built, with the involvement of users, to better meet the needs and economic capacity of these communities.
The Vash green schools project aims to continue to provide solutions to energy poverty in rural schools, but also in rural households.
