UNESCO and MIT foster new international Artificial Intelligence partnerships in Latin America

The activity seeks to bring together leaders from government, industry, academia, and the non-profit sector from across Latin America and the Caribbean, to identify opportunities and risks their countries might face as they move towards increasing the adoption of AI technologies.

It is being organized by a multidisciplinary team of researchers, postdocs and students from the MIT community, coming from all corners of Latin America, with the collaboration of outstanding Latin American Universities, research institutes, and multilateral organizations, among others.

The endeavour has as goal to understand the current state of AI in research, government and industry sectors in Latin America and the Caribbean; and facilitate international dialogue and partnerships between government leaders, researchers, NGOs and industry in the region. It also aims at motivating the deployment AI research projects in Latin America and the Caribbean and, above all inspire key players in the region to execute the initiatives developed at the summit.

Particularly, the goal of this innovative meeting is to build collaborative relationships across Latin America for the advancement of AI research and its applications in the region for the social benefit. In this sense, during the activity, the organisers will focus on the following discussion topics: industry an services; the State, poverty, healthcare, ethics, education and climate change.

Artificial Intelligence Latin American Hackathon 2020

Among the different conferences and exchanges foreseen, the agenda is also announcing the first edition of the Artificial Intelligence Latin American Hackathon 2020, to be held right after the SumMIT, on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 of January. The hackathon we will be tackling challenges related to the above-mentioned topics of the SumMIT.

UNESCO looks forward the Summit constitute a first step towards the participation of this emergent network at CILAC 2020, the Science Open Forum to be held from 21-23 September in Buenos Aires (Argentina).

The SumMIT falls within a number of AI iniatitves UNESCO is, and will be supporting in Latin America and Caribbean in 2020. Among them, the recently held Regional Forum on Artificial Intelligence in Latin America and the Caribbean (12-13 December 2019, San Pablo, Brazil), organized by CETIC.br (UNESCO Category II Centre).

This activity is a contribution of the Regional Bureau for Sciences in Latin America and the Caribbean to the full exercise of researchers and people in general of their Right to Science, constituted as such by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in which Article 27 stipulates that:

“Everyone has the right freely … to participate in scientific advancement and its benefits. (…) Everyone has the right to the protection of the moral and material interests resulting from any scientific (…) production of which he is the author.”,

which is deepened at the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (Article 15) and, at the Inter American level, by the American Convention on Human Rights “Pact of San José, Costa Rica” (B-32) –in particular Article 14 of the Protocol of San Salvador on Economic Social and Cultural Rights-DESC
