On 5 and 6 March 2020, the World Heritage Centre hosted a technical meeting to support Libya in the drafting of the Statement of Outstanding Universal Value, and in the development of the Desired State of Conservation and corrective measures for the eventual removal of Old Town of Ghadamès from the List of World Heritage in Danger.

The meeting, which was held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, brought together the Libyan authorities, ICOMOS, the UNESCO Rabat Office and the World Heritage Centre.

The Department of Antiquities (DoA) of Libya presented the state of conservation of World Heritage sites in the country, and provided an update on their ongoing efforts to ensure their protection and conservation. Technical guidance and feedback was provided on conservation and management of sites, as well as on issues related to boundary delineation and updating of Libya’s Tentative List for potential World Heritage nomination.

The meeting was organized following Decisions 43COM/7A.24, 43COM/7A.26 and 43COM/8C.2 of the World Heritage Committee (Baku, 2019), and at the request of the State Party.
