Education

UNESCO reaffirms a humanistic and holistic vision of education as fundamental to personal and socio-economic development. The object of such education is envisaged in a broad perspective that aims at enabling and empowering people to meet their basic individual needs, fulfill their personal expectations, and contribute to the achievement of their communities and countries’’ socio-economic and development objectives.

  • Capacity Development for Education Policy and Planning

  • Sustainable Development Goal 4 and the Education 2030 Agenda

Culture

As the leading UN agency in the protection of cultural heritage, UNESCO will continue to promote the principles of the 1970 Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property. The Doha office has done this through capacity building of national institutions responsible for the prevention of illicit trafficking of cultural objects in the Gulf countries and Yemen. It will continue to champion this cause by raising awareness about the Convention’s importance to the region and about the available legal tools to help safeguard against illicit trafficking.

UNESCO Doha has also become increasingly involved in the preservation of intangible cultural heritage, defined as:

…the practices, representations, expressions, as well as the knowledge and skills (including instruments, objects, artifacts, cultural spaces), that communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals, recognize as part of their cultural heritage.

Through the promotion of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, UNESCO Doha will support an apprenticeship programme in cooperation with the Qatari government, the Qatar Museums Authority, and the Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies. This programme will seek to preserve the intangible cultural heritage of Qatar and the wider region by ensuring that the skills of ‘living treasures’ are passed on to the younger generation.

Other culture-related activities planned for the next biennium are:

  • Protecting and conserving cultural and natural heritage through the effective implementation of the 1972 World Heritage Convention;
  • Enhancing the protection of cultural property and fighting against its illicit trafficking;
  • Sustaining and promoting the diversity of cultural expressions through the effective implementation of the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions;
  • Promoting the role of culture in development at the global, regional and national levels;
  • Promoting intercultural dialogue, social cohesion and a culture of peace and non-violence.

Communication & Information

The Communication and Information Sector (CI) was established in its present form in 1990. Its programmes are rooted in UNESCO’s Constitution, which requires the Organization to promote the “free flow of ideas by word and image.” 

The Communication and Information Sector consists of:

- Freedom of Expression and Media Development

- Knowledge Societies Division 

The three principal strategic objectives of the Sector’s programmes are:

  • Promoting the free flow of ideas and universal access to information
  • Promoting the expression of pluralism and cultural diversity in the media and world information networks
  • Promoting access for all to ICTs

The Sector also provides the secretariats for two intergovernmental programmes: the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) and the Information for All Programme (IFAP).

Natural Science

UNESCO’s Natural Science Programme has 2 broad objectives:

  • Strategic Objective 1: assist in the creation and enhancement of enabling policy environments in Member States for science, technology and innovation for sustainable development including the strengthening of the science, policy and society interface to advance equity and social inclusion.
  • This includes the mobilization of the full spectrum of sciences to advance sustainability science to address complex and interlinked global challenges in a transdisciplinary way. Capacity-building for research and education in science and engineering will be advanced including through UNESCO institutes and centres, and targeted activities in collaboration with a wide range of public and private partners and with special emphasis on using the power of ICTs
  • Strategic Objective 2: promote the generation and sharing of knowledge in relation to natural resources, and capacity-building through international scientific collaboration for protecting and sustainably managing the ocean and coasts, terrestrial ecosystems, biodiversity, freshwater security and the rational management of the Earth’s geological resources.

Implementation includes inter alia the coordination of monitoring activities, the production of scientific assessments, catalyzing international collaborative projects, capacity-building, and the designation of site-specific examples of sustainable development. The promotion of disaster risk reduction related to natural hazards will be pursued in particular through building capacity in early warning systems and assessments for tsunamis and other ocean-related hazards, floods and landslides to reduce risks and enhance preparedness and resilience.
