World Radio Day event in Viet Nam celebrates diversity and pluralism in the media

Radio is a powerful medium as well as a symbol of humanity and diversity with the power to bring people and communities from all backgrounds together. In recognition of that role, on 13 February UNESCO in partnership with multimedia broadcaster Voice of Vietnam (VOV) is celebrating the 9th edition of World Radio Day in Hanoi with the theme “Radio and Diversity”.

Radio not only informs, but also shapes our lives, giving an opportunity for all voices to speak out and be heard. This year, World Radio Day’s theme is an opportunity to reflect on what diversity is and what it implies for members of a society, a country and the world. The objectives of the event in Viet Nam are to raise greater awareness among the public and media about the importance of radio, encourage decision-makers to establish and provide access to information through radio, and enhance networking and international cooperation among broadcasters.

There are three key areas that the 9th edition of World Radio Day will focus on: 1) advocate for pluralism in radio, including a mix of public, private and community broadcasters; 2) encourage representation in the newsroom, with teams comprised of diverse groups from across society; 3) and promote a diversity of editorial content and programme types reflecting the variety of audiences.

The celebration of World Radio Day 2020 will take place at the headquarters of VOV, established on 7 September 1945, with the participation of VOV President Nguyen The Ky, UNESCO Representative to Viet Nam Michael Croft and Misako Ito, Regional Adviser for Communication and Information at UNESCO Bangkok.
