Education

UNESCO Kathmandu Office is committed to promoting quality education for all, focusing on gender equality, literacy and lifelong learning at all levels of education in Nepal. UNESCO being the global lead agency of Sustainable Development Goal 4, the Office advocates, advises and provides technical support for the improvement of national education policies and plans.

In close collaboration with concerned stakeholders, the Office supports the country through coordinated policy advice, technical assistance, capacity building, designing of education sector development plans in support of the national educational priorities, such as curriculum reform, teacher policies,

ICT in education and monitoring of education progress.

Natural Sciences

In the area of natural sciences, the Office works towards mobilizing science knowledge and policy, focusing on a limited number of strategic interventions, in close cooperation with the UNESCO offices in Jakarta and New Delhi.

The activities, particularly focus on: Disaster risk reduction, in particular, preparing for earthquakes, landslides, and flood hazards; cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology as well as the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology in preparation of national policies and help identification of a number of priority areas for research and development; preservation of nature and natural sites; the Man

    and the Biosphere program; awareness building against air pollution; and advocacy for clean water.

    Culture

    In the area of Culture, the Office is committed to strengthening the role of culture as enabler and driver of sustainable development, through the effective implementation of the UNESCO Culture Conventions. This strategy includes promoting, protecting, conserving and safeguarding Nepal’s tangible and living heritage by increasing the people’s awareness and strengthening national capacities at all levels.

    The activities aim at supporting the government for policy development, updating and implementing. Special focus is given towards preserving the four Nepali World Heritage Sites.

    Communication and Information

    The Office is committed to promote freedom of expression, press freedom, media development, access to information of all citizens and to advocate for the rights and safety of journalists in Nepal.

    For over a decade, Nepal has been in the spotlight for its major political transitions. Natural disasters and political instability increased the responsibility of media workers and journalists to deliver effective and independent information to the people. The Office provides advice and capacity building to stakeholders on these issues, paying special attention to the challenges and aspirations of women journalists.
