Water Security

Water plays central roles across all sectors of human society by greatly contributing to human and ecosystem health, food and energy security and improved quality of life. UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme (IHP), the only intergovernmental scientific programme in freshwater science in the UN system devoted to water research, water resources management, education and capacity building, works on a variety of themes in freshwater science. UNESCO Bangkok is building partnerships with Member State and other sister agencies to support sustainable water resource management in the Mekong River Basin and contribute to achieving freshwater security and environmental sustainability of the region.
