Sumi JO

The world-renowned Korean soprano Sumi Jo was designated UNESCO Artist for Peace in April 2003, in light of her commitment to the promotion and the understanding of Korean culture all over the world, in particular through her support for the “Living Human Treasures” initiative.

Launched in 1993, this programme purpose is to preserve the knowledge and skills necessary for the performing of intangible cultural heritage elements with high historical, artistic or cultural value. In addition, the initiative encourages younger people to learn and acquire the knowledge required for the re-creation of elements of the intangible cultural heritage.
