Director-General calls for investigation into killing of Pablo Isabel Hernández Rivera in Honduras

25/01/2022

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has condemned the murder of community broadcaster and human rights activist Pablo Isabel Hernández Rivera in the town of Tierra Colorada (Honduras) on 9 January.

I condemn the killing of Pablo Isabel Hernández Rivera. Hernández Rivera was a dedicated journalist and defender of human rights who spoke up for his indigenous Lenca community. A thorough investigation will be needed to bring his murderers to justice and establish whether their crime was motivated by his activities as a journalist and human rights defender.

Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General

Hernández Rivera, who was shot dead while walking to church was the director of community Radio Tenan, which regularly reported on corruption at the local level. He was also a leader of the Lenca indigenous community and a member of a network of human rights defenders.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
