Online Press Conference: UNESCO Marine World Heritage – Custodians of the Globe’s Blue Carbon Assets

On 2 March 2021, an online press conference will be held from 3:00pm to 4:00pm Paris time to launch the first global scientific assessment of UNESCO marine World Heritage sites’ blue carbon ecosystems. 

UNESCO Marine World Heritage – Custodians of the Globe’s Blue Carbon Assets, shows that marine World Heritage sites host at least 21% of the world’s blue carbon ecosystem area, and 15% of the world’s blue carbon assets. These carbon stores were equivalent to about 10% of the world’s annual greenhouse gas emissions in 2018, safely keeping billions of tons of CO2 and other greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere.

Published at the start of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, the assessment also points to ways to preserve these invaluable sites, in part, through blue carbon strategies and blue carbon financing.

Speakers for the press conference include the lead author, Professor Carlos M. Duarte, and Fanny Douvere, UNESCO World Heritage Marine Programme. The press conference will be held in in English, French and Spanish.
