Title: Launching and Introductory workshop on the Guidelines for Prosecutors on cases of crimes against journalists in Khmer language

Dates: 24 November 2021

Place: Hyatt Regency Hotel, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Description: On the occasion of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, the UNESCO office in Phnom Pehn, Cambodia will organize a workshop and dialogue to launch the Khmer translation of the Guidelines for Prosecutors on cases of crimes against journalists, jointly published by UNESCO and the International Association of Prosecutors. The event will offer a platform for dialogue among prosecutors, lawyers, security forces and media associations to discuss prevention and protection measures to address the safety of journalists in the country.

Title: Global Conference on the Protection, Integration and Mental Health of Refugee Journalists

Dates: 5 November 2021

Place: San José

Description: The UNESCO Cluster Office in San Jose, Costa Rica will be organizing the Global Conference on the Protection, Integration and Mental Health of Refugee Journalists. The conference will be focused on discussing the link between impunity for crimes against journalists and the forced displacement of journalists. This initiative will be launched with the regional offices of IOM, UNHCR and WHO as well as NGOs, namely, CPJ, IFL, Reporters Without Borders, Article 19, Frontline Defenders and Protection International. The event is part of a long-term strategy of the Cluster Office to build alliances with key stakeholders geared towards to ensuring that the welfare and protection of refugee journalists, which is a priority in plans and policies in the Central American region.

Title: Training for the African Judicial Training Institutes

Dates: 29 November – 3 December 2021

Place: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Description: A five-day workshop training of trainers for judicial actors in Africa, organized by UNESCO in partnership with the African Court on Human and People’s Rights, will be organized in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 29 November to 3 December 2021. Within the framework of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, the training will focus on international and regional standards on freedom of expression and the safety of journalists. The module of the training is also designed for the potential inclusion of freedom of expression and safety of journalists’ issues in the curricula of existing modules/courses of judicial training centres in the country.

Title: Roundtable discussion on the issue of impunity of crimes against journalists

Dates: 15 October 2021, 10:00 – 12:00 CET

Place: Press Club of Strasbourg

Description: The association “Les Amis de Ghislaine Dupont et Claude Verlon” will hold a roundtable discussion on 15 October 2021 to mark the International Day to End Impunity of Crimes Against Journalists. The roundtable will provide a platform for dialogue to discuss the importance of addressing the issue of impunity to guarantee the safety of journalists and the right to freedom of expression. Journalists Antoine Glaser and Pierre Haski and Judge Mattias Guyomar of the European Court of Human Rights will participate in the discussion among other prominent speakers.

Title: Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon Scholarship

Dates: 2 November 2021

Place: Broadcasted on Radio France Internationale (RFI)

Description: The eighth edition of the Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon Scholarship, created in tribute to its two reporters murdered on November 2, 2013 in Kidal, northern Mali, is aimed at all young journalists and reporting technicians under the age of 35 who have already worked in the radio field for at least two years, and reside in French-speaking countries in Africa. The scholarship will be awarded on 2 November, on the occasion of the IDEI, and the winners will be announced during a special broadcast on RFI. Read here for more information.

Title: Webinar "Impunity and cases of violence against journalists in Guatemala"

Dates: 10 November 2021

Place: Virtual

Description: In the framework of the 2021 International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, the UNESCO Office in Guatemala City, Guatemala, will hold a webinar focusing on the issue of impunity and cases of violence against journalists in Guatemala. Demos, a local NGO dealing with the right to freedom of expression, together with the journalists’ coalition Red el Miedo Guatemala will inform the discussion. Title: The Safety of online and offline journalists and the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity

Description: On the occasion of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, the UNESCO Office in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in partnership with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Knowledge and Freedom Foundation (FOKAL), the Association of Haitian Journalists (AJH) and iMedia, will launch a hybrid format large-scale awareness-raising campaign on the safety of journalists and the implementation of the United Nations Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.

Title: International Day for Ending Impunity Against Journalists

Dates: 3 November 2021

Place: Hybrid event, New Delhi, India, and virtual

Description: On the occasion of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, UNESCO Office in New Delhi in collaboration with the Delegation of the European Union to Sri Lanka and Maldives, Sri Lanka National Commission for UNESCO, and the Ministry of Mass Media of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, will organise a reginal hybrid event on 3 November 2021. The event will provide a platform for dialogue with panelists from the region who will present their recommendations for the safety of journalists and will also share their country presentations. Title: 77th General Assembly of the Inter-American Press Association

Dates: 19-22 October 2021

Place: Virtual

Description: The Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) is holding its 77th General Assembly from 19 to 22 October 2021. In the framework of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, this 4-day conference will offer a platform for dialogue to leading experts on freedom of expression to discuss the rising number of threats against journalists and how to improve and guarantee a safer environment to them. Title: Roundtable discussion on countering threats of violence and crimes against journalists to protect freedom of expression for all

Dates: 22 September 2021

Place: CMC Communication and Media Commission of Iraq and virtual

Description: Within the framework of the International Day to End Impunity of Crimes Against Journalists, the UNESCO office for Iraq, together with CMC and Iraq Journal of Science (IJS), will hold a roundtable to discuss the national mechanisms on safety of journalists and the government’s measures to end impunity and address the high level of threats.

Title: Roundtable discussion focusing on the important role of prosecutorial services in addressing threats of violence against journalists

Dates: 3 November 2021

Place: Syracuse and virtual

Description: To celebrate the 2021 International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, a high-level roundtable discussion, organized by Ossigeno per l’Informazione and supported by UNESCO, will take place in a hybrid format on 3 November 2021 at the Syracuse International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights. The roundtable will provide a platform for dialogue among prosecutors and journalists on prevention and protection measures to address the safety of journalists, and it will highlight the instrumental role of prosecutorial services in investigating and prosecuting not only killings, but also threats of violence against journalists.

Title: Panel Discussion on the Occasion of the International Day to End Impunity

Dates: 2 November 2021

Place: Maison de la Presse, Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Description: On the occasion of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, the UNESCO office in Abidjan, Ivory Coast will support the Journalists National Union of Ivory Coast (UNJCI) panel discussion on the issues of freedom of expression and the safety of journalists. Public authorities such as prosecutors, lawyers and police officers as well the National Council of Human Rights will participate to the event.

Title: COLPIN 2021 (Conferencia Latinoamericana de Periodismo de Investigación / Latin American Investigative Journalism Conference)

Dates: 28 October to 2 November 2021

Place: Canelones City, Uruguay

Description: The Instituto Prensa y Sociedad, in partnership with the government of the city of Canelones and the University of the Republic, will hold the Latin American Conference on Investigative Journalism in Canelones, Uruguay from 28 October to 2 November. For four days, about 200 journalists from 15 different countries of the continent will have the opportunity to share knowledge and best practices in an agenda of lectures, training workshops and panel discussions in the framework of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists. The event will gather approximately 30 Latin American speakers in person and other 70 virtual speakers, whose contributions will be broadcast to an international audience of an estimated 5.000 journalists and free expression activists.

Title: Webinar "Media Freedom in Malta: Murder, Disinformation and Legal Intimidation"

Description: The Justice for Journalists Foundation and The Foreign Policy Centre will co-organize a webinar on media freedom in Malta on the occasion of the IDEI on 2 November 2021. This event will offer a platform for dialogue to discuss the achievements of the Daphne Caruana Galizia’s justice campaign and how independent journalism can be better protected in the future. Title: International Day to End Impunity (IDEI) Myanmar 2021

Dates: 2 November 2021

Place: Virtual

Description: In collaboration with the Myanmar Women Journalists Society (MWJS), a roundtable will be organized to address the specific challenges that women journalists in Myanmar face while carrying out their professions, and to highlight their key role in defending freedom of the press in Myanmar. The discussion will be followed by concrete recommendations on prevention and protection measures to enhance the safety of women journalists and promote democracy.

Title: Conference on the safety of journalists and media freedom in Pakistan

Dates: 2 November 2021

Place: Islamabad, Pakistan

Description: On the occasion of the International Day to End Impunity, UNESCO Office in Islamabad, Pakistan will hold a conference in partnership with the Embassies of Sweden and the Netherlands, the High Commission of Canada, the EU delegation, the British High Commission and the Parliamentarians’ Commission for Human Rights. The event will engage journalists, civil society actors and police representatives to discuss the status of the safety of journalists and media freedom in Pakistan.

Title: 3rd Asma Jahangir Conference on Challenges to Human Dignity

Dates: 19 to 21 November 2021

Place: Lahore, Pakistan

Description: In the framework of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, a panel discussion on the principles of democracy, freedom of expression, and the rule of law, will be held on 21 November 2021 in Lahore, Pakistan. The panel will offer the opportunity to discuss the emerging situation in Afghanistan and its impact at the regional level. The panel discussion is part of a 3-day conference organized by the Pakistan Bar Council along with AGHS Legal Aid Cell, the law firm founded by the internationally renowned human rights activist and lawyer Asma Jahangir in 1980.

Title: Webinar “Media Impact and Protection of Journalists in a Changing Reality”

Description: On the occasion of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, Aljazeera Center for Public Liberties and Human Rights will organize the webinar “Media Impact and Protection of Journalists in a Changing Reality”. The focus of the discussion will be on the legal and moral responsibilities of media institutions, governments, organizations and civil societies in light of the rising number of threats of violence against journalists and the issue of impunity. The event will also offer the opportunity to discuss the outcome of the implementation of the UN Plan on the Safety of Journalists, the effectiveness of the preventive mechanisms and measures undertaken by UNESCO, and the countermeasures taken by the Human Rights Council to address these issues.

Title: Creating a Safe Environment for Journalists in South Sudan

Dates: 2-3 November 2021

Place: Juba, South Sudan

Description: On the occasion of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, a 2-day conference will be organized by the Association for Media Development in South Sudan (AMDISS) and the National Press Club in partnership with other national stakeholders including the government and media partners from the United Nations. Day one will be dedicated to presentations and panel discussions on topics of freedom of expression and the safety of journalists in South Sudan. For day 2, it is planned a meet and greet session between media practitioners, government and diplomatic missions to promote advocacy tools to foster the protection and promotion of freedom of expression in the country.

Title: The Safety of Journalists: “Freedom of expression through a gender perspective”

Description: To commemorate the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, the Permanent Missions of Greece and France in Geneva will jointly organize a virtual event on freedom of expression and the safety of journalists. The discussion will focus on the importance to reinforce the gender perspective in the media environment in order to eliminate barriers that women face in freedom of opinion and expression. Title: Public Seminar on countering threats of violence and crimes against journalists to protect freedom of expression in Thailand and the Mekong countries

Dates: 2 November 2021

Place: Virtual

Description: On the occasion of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists 2021, UNESCO Bangkok will support Prachatai to launch a special report documenting threats of violence and crimes against journalists in Thailand covering conflicts, discuss regional trends, and engage in a public discussion with the judiciary actors in Thailand to prosecute threats of violence and crimes against journalists. The event will also be an occasion to present the Guidelines for Prosecutors on cases of crimes against journalists, jointly published by UNESCO and the International Association of Prosecutors.

Title: Opening Hearing of the People’s Tribunal on the Murder of Journalists

Dates: 2 November 2021, 2021 9:00 - 18:00 CET

Place: Nieuwe Kerk, The Hague

Description: The People's Tribunal on the Murder of Journalists, established by Free Press Unlimited, the Committee to Protect Journalists and Reporters Sans Frontières to indict states that have neglected their obligation to guarantee the safety of journalists, will open its hearing on 2 November 2021. The Tribunal’s Prosecutor has investigated unsolved murder cases and will present the evidence to a panel of esteemed judges. Eyewitnesses and expert witnesses will present their testimonies, and a keynote address will be delivered by Baroness Helena Kennedy of the Shaws QC, member of the High-Level Panel of Legal Experts on Media Freedom.

Title: Training of trainers to strengthen media institutions’ capacities to address violence against women journalists in Tanzania

Dates: 8 – 30 November 2021

Place: Dodoma

Description: In the framework of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, the Tanzania Media Women’s Association will organize a training of managing editors, journalists and media practitioners from mainstream and community-based media entities to build their capacities to promote positive norms and gender equality in and through the media in Tanzania.

Title: National consultation for the integration of the media into the national frameworks

Dates: 19-26 November 2021

Place: Training Centre for Development Cooperation, Arusha, Tanzania

Description: On the occasion of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, a national consultation for the integration of the media into the national framework will provide a platform for dialogue among experts from the United Nations, the government and civil society organisations including media and research associations. The discussion will focus on the necessity to implement critical joint action to address violence against journalists, particularly against female journalists, online and offline.

Title: Safety of Journalists: How to Fight Impunity of Crimes against Journalists

Dates: 2 November 2021

Place: Tunis, Tunisia (hybrid in-person/online)

Description: A short description of the event: A panel discussion with journalists, civil society actors, representatives of the government, the Council of Europe, and members of UN Agencies will take place in Tunis on the occasion of IDEI on 2 November 2021. The focus of the discussion will be on the challenges of impunity for crimes against journalists and how to tackle the issue. The event will also offer the opportunity to the Unit for Monitoring of Crimes against Journalists in Tunisia to present their annual report. The event and monitoring report is supported by UNESCO’s multi-donor Programme on the Freedom of Expression and Safety of Journalists.

Title: Roundtable discussion on the role of prosecutors in cases of crimes against journalists

Dates: 4 October 2021

Place: Kiev and virtual

Description: The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) will hold a roundtable discussion to present the Ukrainian version of the UNESCO’s Guidelines for Prosecutors on Cases of Crimes against Journalists on 4 October 2021. The event will be marked by high-level representative of the Office of the General Prosecutor of Ukraine, including the Head of the Interdepartmental Working Group on Crimes Against Journalists and Head of the Department of Criminal Law Policy, who will be presenting the Guidelines. The event will offer a platform for dialogue among prosecutors and journalists on prevention and protection measures to address the safety of journalists.

Title: Chasing Justice: Implementing the Rule of Law to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists

Dates: 7 November, 18:00 GMT

Description: On the occasion of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, the Journalist Support Committee (JSC) will organize an online discussion on the importance to uphold the rule of law in order to end the cycle of impunity and prevent further crimes of journalists. The UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, prominent journalists and speakers from the International Bar Association, Reporters without Borders, and the CIA will inform the discussion. The symposium will also include live testimonies of victims of crimes committed against journalists. The event will be broadcast on the YouTube channel of JSCPRESS.

Title: Panel discussion on “State control of the digital space and the watchdog role of the media”

Description: The Centre for Freedom of the Media at the University of Sheffield will host a panel discussion to mark the 2021 International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists. Two outstanding speakers, Barbara Trionfi, Executive Director of the International Press Institute and Tina Burrett, an academic and expert on media and politics, will present their latest research into the impacts caused by states’ pressure in seeking control of the digital space as well as the vital role of free and uncensored media to fulfil the watchdog role on behalf of the public.

Title: Panel discussion “Justice for Journalism - Threats Facing a Free Press”

Place: University of New Hampshire (UNH) in Manchester

Description: The World Affairs Council of New Hampshire will hold a panel discussion on the threats facing journalism around the world and how everyone can work to support a free press. The event will be organized on 2 November 2021, on the occasion of the International Day to End Impunity, and it will focus on the threats to journalism and the importance of ending impunity to guarantee freedom of expression and access to information for all citizens. Carlos Martinez de la Serna of the Committee for the Protection of Journalists and Diane Foley of the James W Foley Legacy Foundation will take part in the discussion. The panel presentation will be followed by a moderated Question and Answer session where both in-person and online attendees will engage in the discussion.

Title: Misinformation, Hate-speech and the Safety of Women Journalists

Description: In cooperation with the Permanent Mission of Greece to the UN, and the Group of Friends for the Protection of Journalists, UNESCO will hold a virtual event titled “Misinformation, Hate-speech and the safety of Women Journalists”, to commemorate the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists. The event will aim to examine the impact of hate-speech on the security of journalists, with a focus on women journalists, by bringing together prominent experts from technical agencies, media, civil society and UN Member States. Prior to the panel discussion, a high-level segment will feature the participation of the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, and the Director-General of UNESCO. Title: Training on “Safety of Journalists” for Yemeni journalists

Dates: 2 – 7 November 2021

Place: Virtual

Description: The training will be organized in partnership with Al Jazeera Media Institute (AJMI), as part of the Empowering Yemeni Youth towards Peace project. It will be a 6 days online training, from 2 to 7 November, given by Mahmoud Alken, producer and journalist in Al Jazeera. The goal of this training is to assist Yemeni journalists in identifying and tackling the threats. It also aims to address the gender dimensions of the safety of journalists both online and on the field. Approximately 15 professional journalists will attend this training.

Title: Conference on occupational safety and digital security, reality and opportunities for enhancing safety skills among Yemeni journalists

Dates: 2 November 2021

Place: Virtual

Description: A coordination meeting with media development actors will be organized as part of a broader initiative funded by the Multi-Donor Programme on Freedom of Expression and Safety of Journalists. The meeting will be organized on 2 November 2021 by the Studies & Economic Media Center (SEMC), and it will gather selected media organizations in Yemen to discuss issues related to freedom of expression and the safety of journalists.

Title: GIJC 2021: International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists

Dates: 1 - 5 November 2021

Place: Virtual

Description: The Global Investigative Journalism Conference (GIJC) is the seminal international event in investigative reporting, featuring practical panels and workshops on the latest investigative news. This year’s online conference will be held online from 1 to 5 November 2021 and will feature more than 50 sessions. On 2 November, the conference will mark International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists with special programming that addresses practical ways to investigate and prevent threats of violence against journalists. UNESCO will be the official partner, and among the panels, Forbidden Stories, the ACOS Alliance, and the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project will take part in the discussion.
