Media and information literacy and critical thinking: workshops in the Russian regions

UNESCO IITE co-organized two interregional workshops on the promotion of reading and media and information literacy held on November 15, 2021 in Kirov and on November 18 in Rostov-on-Don. The workshops were organized on the initiative of the Interregional Center of Library Cooperation and the Russian Committee of the UNESCO Information for All Programme. The events were held in a blended online and offline format with the support of the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation on the basis of the central libraries of the regions – Kirov State Regional Universal Scientific Library and the Don State Public Library.

The following topics were discussed during the seminars: programs and projects in the field of children’s, youth and adult reading, trends in book publishing in Russia, the possibilities and limitations of audiobooks, the place of libraries in the development of reading and the formation of media and information literacy (MIL). Programme Specialist of UNESCO IITE, Ms. Tatiana Murovana, made a presentation on one of the most popular soft skills – critical thinking, providing the relevant structure of skills and opportunities for its formation within the approaches to media and information literacy developed by UNESCO.
