Guidelines for teachers on the course “Healthy Lifestyle” for grades 8-9 and 10-11 (Republic of Armenia)

The Healthy Lifestyle course, introduced into the curriculum of schools in the Republic of Armenia in 2008-2010, covers topics related to adolescence and puberty, understanding gender and the importance of gender equality, preventing HIV infection, maintaining physical, mental and reproductive health, healthy nutrition, development of communication skills, conflict resolution and decision-making. According to the decision of the Government of the Republic of Armenia, in grades 8-11, 14 hours of study are annually allocated for the new compulsory course.

To assist teachers in introducing the new subject, two manuals on the methodology of conducting health classes were developed – for grades 8-9 and 10-11. In 2017, specialists from the Institute of Children’s and Adolescents’ Health (at the Arabkir Medical Center) and the National Institute of Education prepared a new edition of the teacher guide. Edits were made mainly to lesson plans on HIV prevention, sexual behavior, and reproductive health. The latest version of the publication was approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia and published with the support of UNESCO IITE. At the end of 2018, all schools in Armenia were provided with new manuals.
